ST JOSEPH’S CATHOLIC PRIMARY SCHOOL
PRESS RELEASE — JUNE 2025
After nearly 70 years at the heart of the Hollingdean and wider East Brighton community, St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School will be closing its doors for the final time next month.

Throughout its history, St Joseph’s has been more than just a school. It has been a place of care, compassion and community for generations of families. Many of our pupils come from challenging backgrounds, yet they have experienced warmth, stability and love within our walls. This is what so many families have told us they will miss the most.

Despite passionate efforts to keep the school open, including marches and heartfelt appeals from families, the time has come to say goodbye. It is a deeply emotional moment for our dedicated staff and school community, but we are determined to celebrate the incredible legacy of this exceptional school.
As we enter our final weeks, we are holding special events for our current pupils to mark the end of their time here with joy and pride.

We are also inviting former pupils, staff and friends of the school to a special Farewell Afternoon, where we can come together, share memories and say a proper goodbye to a place that has meant so much to so many.

Farewell Afternoon Invitation
Date: Saturday 5 July 2025
Time: 2pm til 4.30pm
Location: St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, Davey Drive BN1 7BF

What to expect:
  • Guided tours of the school

This is a unique opportunity to return, reconnect and reflect. Whether you were here recently or many years ago, you are part of the St Joseph’s story. We would love for you to join us and be part of this final celebration.

Help us share this invitation widely so that as many past pupils as possible have the chance to say farewell to this much-loved school.

Please click  HERE  for a statement following last night's council meeting where the final decision about the closure of St Joseph's School  was taken.

Following the statutory period of consultation, Brighton and Hove City Council announced that St Joseph's Catholic School will be closing at the end of this term.

Save our School - A Song

St. Joseph's was kindly granted permission to use the melody of Nazareth for lyrics aimed at promoting awareness of the school’s campaign to save it from closure.

The lyrics were crafted to emphasise the vital need for a community school in Hollingdean.

We recently received the devastating news that The Diocese of Arundel and Brighton have made the difficult decision to consult on the closure of St Joseph's Catholic School.

Tucked away in the hills of Hollingdean, a small school with a big heart and great ambition. As a Catholic school, we welcome children of all faiths and none; our diversity is our great strength. We are a small school with beautifully behaved children and very supportive, friendly staff. Visitors to our school often remark on the calm, spacious environment and warm welcome.  Our Ofsted report also made reference to the family atmosphere.

Our children say "If you spend just one day here, you know everyone by the end of the day" and "even the staff are friends".
