Music
Here at St Joseph’s, we love to sing, make music and play instruments!
Our School Vision – At St Joseph’s, we create and engage with music to enrich our lives and to connect with the people around us. Our class teachers deliver blocks of music half-termly to each class. We base our music lessons on the CHARANGA scheme of work.

LEARNING A MUSICAL INSTRUMENT AT ST JOSEPH’S
A number of children have expressed an interest in learning a musical instrument at St Joseph’s. We currently offer keyboard lessons on a Thursday afternoon.
Sound Makers
Sound Makers is a Brighton and Hove model of whole class ensemble tuition and is linked to The National Plan for Music Education.
Led by a Create Music specialist instrumental teacher and supported by the class teacher, pupils experience the excitement of practical music making and learn: instrumental technique, ensemble skills, links to composing and improvising, performance skills and working as part of a team.
Children in the Year 5 class have this musical experience each year and usually learn to play the ukulele.
NATIONAL SCHOOLS' SINGING PROGRAMME
We are delighted to have been invited to take part in an exciting new singing programme being rolled out across The Catholic Diocese of Arundel and Brighton. The schools' singing programme is part of a national initiative to enrich and support choral singing in schools.
Years 3 and 4 children work each week with Faye Eldret, a choral director for the schools' singing programme in the Arundel and Brighton Diocese.
Our Year 4 class joined other Year 4 classes from across Brighton and Hove in the chapel at Cardinal Newman School this week for a Choral Festival.
They performed a short programme of sacred and secular songs, providing a wonderful opportunity for them to join their voices and celebrate the joy of singing.

All of the schools working with Faye have collaboratively produced an E-Christmas card. Click HERE to listen to it.
Curriculum Music:
As part of Black History Month, each class took part in an African drumming workshop to experience an important part of African culture.
